The Man Who Will Come

The Man Who Will Come

Giorgio Diritti • Italy • 2009

Martina hasn’t spoken a word since her baby brother died in her arms. Her mother, Lena, is once again pregnant, while her father, a peasant farmer, works the land in an effort to feed his growing family. The rural landscape is both idyllic and threatening, as villagers seek to maintain a semblance of normal life while partisans wage war against the occupying German forces. But one killing leads to another, and soon an escalating chain of retribution will irrevocably alter the fabric of this small community.

Shot in Bolognese dialect and with a mesmerizing performance by its young protagonist, The Man Who Will Come hauntingly dramatizes the 1944 Marzabotto massacre. Giorgio Diritti’s second film premiered at BFI London, San Francisco, and Rome, where it won the Audience Award. The Man Who Will Come was nominated for fifteen David di Donatello Awards, winning Best Film, Best Producer and Best Sound.
