Cosmos

Andrzej Zulawski • France • 2015 • A remarkable finale from the director of Possession

Witwold, who has just failed the bar, and Fuchs, who has quit his job in fashion, are friends. They are both staying at a guesthouse run by Madame Woytis, mother to the incandescent Lena, who has recently been married. One day during a walk in the woods Witwold encounters a dead sparrow, triggering a surrealist whirlwind of tension, histrionics, and foreboding omens, all while his obsession with Lena deepens.

Transforming Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz's eponymous novel into a manic exploration of desire, Cosmos is a frenetic cinematic experience. Ukrainian-born Polish filmmaker Andrzej Zulawski's final film premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival, where it won Best Director.
