Call Her Applebroog

Ida Applebroog was born into an ultra-Orthodox Jewish family in the Bronx in the 1920s. As one of three daughters to a father who had prayed for sons, her childhood was less than cheerful. Art became her solace, and she soon discovered the sublimating potential of creative expression. Now in her eighties, Applebroog recollects her journey from a wife hospitalized for depression in the late sixties, to the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship, a MacArthur Fellowship “Genius Grant,” and an artist with representation at Hauser & Wirth.

Imbued with a playful spirit, Beth B’s portrait of her mother premiered at Woodstock Film Festival and MoMA’s Doc Fortnight. Call Her Applebroog is a New York Times Critic’s Pick.
